Decided to test the 7D with a Canon EF 100-400 IS lens during the first half of the Tennessee spring football game. I shot at full zoom so I was effectively shooting 640mm. Shooting from the end zone on sticks at that length was tough but I got a couple decent moments out of it. Overall it was a good learning experience. Focusing on an SLR lens is quite a bit different than focusing on a video lens. A video lens gives a lot more distance in the turn than an SLR. So the slightest movement in the ring on an SLR lens can throw the subject out of focus if it is moved too far in either direction. Hopefully when I get my Redrock gear in next week I will have an easier time pulling focus on the players.
Another issue I had was overheating. I shot at 60fps and it started overheating about 5 minutes into the shoot. It was a little higher than 70 degrees outside so it’s not like I was standing out in the desert. There should be no reason for it to overheat so fast. Don’t know if I got a lemon or if any other 7D would have done the same. I turned the camera off everytime I got a chance, but the thermometer symbol would appear moments into shooting again. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.
Cool post. Site took a few seconds to load, but definitely worth the wait.
